Two nights ago we had a power failure. I only noticed, because when I woke up in the morning, my room was just too quiet. Then I realised my server was down. So I started it up, went to work and forgot about it. Then when I came back home and tried to browse the net, I only that the internet connection was down. Checked the ppp connection on the server and it wasn’t there. Did some debugging and noticed that it couldn’t establish a pppoe connection due to a timeout. Figured it must be something with my ISP, so I called them today and they said my connection was active..
So I went home, plugged the network cable that comes from the wireless internet box thing on the roof into my laptop, set up pppoe and it worked immediately. Tried my server again and the same thing happened. Restarted everything involved, checked the configuration… nothing. In the end I figured it might just be some loose connection or maybe one of the two network cards in the server broke. Didn’t feel like digging it out from behind my desk and putting a keyboard and screen on it, so I swapped the interfaces around in /etc/iftab, swapped the cables, ignored the fact that the LED on the one card was now dead, rebooted and now everything works fine. Weird.
Oh well.. that server is ancient - its hardware is something like 7 years old. I just kindof assumed that the power supply or a fan or a harddrive would be the first to go ;)
