Sony Ericsson W800i

I recently upgraded to a Cell C contract (so that I can keep my Cell C prepaid number) and got the Sony Ericsson W800i. The camera is quite good for a phone and the music player features are just great. I especially like the way it gets multitasking right: The radio keeps playing until you turn it off, there is a button for toggling between the music player and phone features, the music pauses automatically whenever it would make sense for it to do so, the track title overlays for a moment no matter what you’re doing when a new song starts playing, etc. Never before did I get used to a new phone this quickly - the user interface is just that good.

I found this excellent page on useing the phone with linux: http://stefans.datenbruch.de/k750i/. I still have to try and use it as a bluetooth remote control, but other than that I can report that everything works fine. What initially confused me was I copied mp3s onto it over usb from linux and the songs didn’t show up, but then I realised that it “locks” the memory stick and the phone only picks up the changes once you unmount it.

I also downloaded Opera Mini which is a far better browser than the builtin one. In fact, it is so good that I was jokeing about starting a fan club. It is so much easier to use than the builtin one, things just work and navigating around is very easy.

When I just got the phone the internet access worked, but after a day it couldn’t connect over GPRS at all. Then after numerous calls to Cell C’s callcentre staff, saveing the settings and restarting the phone again and again, things just started to work again… Comes down to it that you shouldn’t go with Cell C if you’re after good mobile data service.

I also still have to figure out where I can download or buy games if I’m with Cell C and stay in South Africa. The “3rd party” mobile industry is just shocking. People charge a fortune for shit and the consumers let them get away with it. Kindof feels like the pc shareware scene in the early 90s. I haven’t event found any good sites that offer quality reviews.

Just wish the battery would last longer, because listening to the radio or mp3 player really drains it..
